Prebiotics
Prebiotics Help A Healthy, Normal Gut Microbiome
Prebiotics supplements are not utilized by the dog but are foods that feed probiotics to support their growth and well-being. Since probiotics are known to help maintain normal digestive health and support the immune system, ensuring their viability and growth helps your dog.
What Are Prebiotics?
Prebiotics are sugars, carbohydrates, plant fibers that are not digested by the dog and fermentation products like MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) that are fermented by good bacteria in the gut. A by-product of this fermentation is the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are absorbed and utilized by the dog to promote a healthy gut.
Common Prebiotics to Support Normal Gut Bacteria
Here are a few common prebiotics that are utilized in supplementing canine diets to support probiotics.
- Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) – a short chain sugar easy for bacteria to digest
- Inulin – oligosaccharide that is sourced primarily from chicory root
- Mannnan-oligosaccharides (MOS) – Sourced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, helps normalize gut microflora and support normal digestive health
- Pectin
- Psyllium
